How To: Eat Healthy On Vacation

I was just in California for a week and I really did have a great time. Being around palm trees, the ocean and gorgeous beaches really lights me up and makes me a happy gal. One thing I loooved was all the yummy food I ate.
I used to struggle a ton with eating clean while on vacation. I would eat so much food (usually junk food) all day long and I always came home feeling super sluggish and bloated. I would spend my trips in pain from all the crap I would eat. This trip, I decided to do my best to eat clean while still enjoying myself. Did I perfect it? Definitely not. But I definitely ate much better than I typically would.
Here are the steps I followed to help me eat clean and feel good while away on vacation:
1. Plan ahead
If you know you are going to be out and about all day, figure out where you are going to eat, when you are going to eat, and if you can, what you are going to eat. This will stop you from making decisions while hungry and settling for the first thing you come across which in most cases, is fast food.
2. Research
Before your trip, research restaurants that will be in your area. This helps for those times that you may need something quick but don’t have time to sit down and look at everything in your area.
3. Speak up
This goes for when you are deciding what to eat with a group of people or if you are simply speaking to your server at a restaurant.
When traveling with a group of people, it may be harder to eat healthy since the people you are with may not have the same goals around nutrition as you do. If you want to go somewhere healthier than what they are suggesting, SPEAK UP. There is probably someone else in the group who likes your idea as well.
When talking with your server, don’t be shy to make substitutions or to change your order to fit with your usual lifestyle. They generally will not have an issue with it and it will not be a difficult switch.
4. Head to the grocery store/market
I always try to head to a store to grab some healthy snacks for my trip. I either bring snacks with me or I purchase some when I have arrived. It just depends on what I am wanting and if I want to grab fresh produce or not. If you are staying in a place with a kitchen, even better! Buy some groceries so you can make yourself a few of your meals. This will be the healthiest option as well as the cheapest.
These are just a few tips I have picked up along the way. I still am learning but these steps have definitely helped a ton. Don't forget that you are on vacation and it is totally OKAY to treat yourself and indulge. It isn't every day that we are surrounded by yummy treats so don't be afraid to enjoy yourself.
Let me know how you stay healthy on vacation or if you try any of these out!
Safe travels!
